THE ALABAMA RADIO READING SERVICE NETWORK
WHAT IS THE ARRS?The Alabama Radio Reading Service (ARRS), begun in 1978, is a statewide audio service offering programming to blind and print handicapped Alabamians. The service operates on a subcarrier of public radio 90.3 WBHM in Birmingham, AL and on subcarriers of other public radio stations throughout Alabama. Special audio receivers, which are available through the ARRS, are needed to hear the broadcasts. The service, which is primarily funded by a grant from the Alabama Department of Rehabilitative Services, with additional financial and in-kind support from WBHM, has one full-time employee who works with more than three hundred volunteers each year, to read the many newspapers, books and magazines for the blind and print handicapped. The (ARRS) broadcasts programming 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Each week the ARRS broadcasts readings of a variety of magazines the sighted world enjoys, from the National Enquirer to the Reader's Digest and Modern Maturity. Every day volunteers read The Birmingham News and the Birmngham Post-Herald. Special programs are also broadcast throughout the week, covering such diverse topics as travel, cooking, cosmetics, exercise and finances, all geared for Alabama's blind and print handicapped community. If you would like more information about the volunteer jobs available at the ARRS, or if you would like more information about availability of the special receivers to hear the ARRS, please call Philip Habeeb at 205-934-6576.
