This weekend, Justin Brown pulls double duty with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. He's both conductor and soloist on the Masterworks series, which features Brown conducting works by Messiaen and Strauss, but also the soloist in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23. You've got the menu planned and the turkey bought...Thanksgiving is once again, right around the corner. It may be easy to plug through the holiday on autopilot, but for independent radio producer Andy Raskin, one Thanksgiving season jolted him out of the everyday ho-hum.

Andy Raskin is a writer and editor in San Francisco. He stories have appeared in The New York Times, Gourmet, Wired, and on public radio's This American Life.

A year ago, African-American folk artist Jimmy Lee Sudduth died at the age of 97. New York Times art critic Michael Kimmelman praised the Alabama native for his "pictures of improbable chalky luminosity and understated bliss." Commentator John Carroll has this reflection.

With a talent that's thrust him onstage with notables such as Bob Hope, Birmingham musician Dan Gilliland isn't just whistling Dixie, he's whistling all around Dixie - and other places as well. And he's singing and performing a busy concert schedule and serving as Minister of Music at his church to boot. But Gilliland, who spoke with us in the Tapestry studio, traces his musical journey back to his parent's old phonograph.
