Steve Chiotakis

Steve Chiotakis

For more than 11 years, Steve has hosted WBHM's Morning Edition. An award-winning writer and producer of public affairs reports, you can hear him on-the-air weekdays from 5:00-9:00 am and online with substantive reports and interviews. He's also a contributor to National Public Radio and has produced radio reports for public and commercial networks for listeners in North America and around the world.

Born near Chicago, Steve is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a BA in Communications Studies. He also has an extensive resume of experience in the Birmingham radio market, where he began and continues on-the-air. Starting in the late 1980s at WVOK/WZRR, he went on to News/Talk WERC where he anchored and reported (as Steve St. George) and picked up numerous awards. During his years there, he covered Alabama's contribution to the first Gulf War, the deadly L'Express plane crash in Ensley and Hurricane Andrew on the Gulf coast. Steve was also one of only a handful of broadcasters on-the-air during the "Blizzard of '93", the city's worst snow storm. Through the years, he's anchored at other commercial Birmingham stations (WMJJ, WYDE, WWBR, WAPI, WJOX) and several in Huntsville as well (WZYP, WVNN, WHVK). He was News Director at Dick Broadcasting Company for several years when he left for public radio WBHM/WSGN.

While in public radio, Steve has produced hundreds of long-form feature stories and interviews tackling issues such as health care, the economy, city and state government, education, the arts and his favorites: politics and transportation (most of the time, together). His anchoring and reporting have garnered dozens of statewide, regional and national awards.

Steve is heavily involved in the Birmingham community and speaks to civic groups and schools all over north-central Alabama. He is a past-president and current board member of the Alabama Associated Press Broadcasters Association (AAPBA). He is also a member of Public Radio News Directors Incorporated (PRNDI) and the Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA).
